Yakult UK & Ireland has appointed Shinji Yamaguchi as Managing Director, a change that lands as demand for the probiotic drink, manufactured entirely at Yakult's factory in Almere, Netherlands, continues to grow across the UK and Ireland's gut health category.
Yamaguchi replaces Hiroaki Yoshimura, who leaves after 11 years in the UK, eight as Managing Director, and moves to become Managing Director of Yakult Europe, the entity overseeing the Almere manufacturing site that supplies all Yakult sold across the region.
Yamaguchi brings more than three decades of experience within Yakult, including building the company's early US sales and operations functions, and, most recently, leading market development plans within Yakult's International Business Division in Japan.
Yakult is a Japanese fermented milk drink company whose European products are manufactured at a single factory in Almere, the Netherlands. Yakult UK & Ireland, the sales and distribution entity covering both markets, works closely with Yakult's European Research Centre for Microbiology, based in the UK.
Yamaguchi said he is excited to lead the continued growth of Yakult across the UK and Ireland, describing them as mature markets with strong foundations where Yakult has earned trust through its expertise in probiotics. He said his focus is on building that trust further with consumers, customers and the category, noting the strong awareness of gut health already seen among the scientific and medical communities working with Yakult's UK-based research team.
The leadership change lands as European manufacturers of probiotic and gut-health products scale supply from centralised manufacturing bases rather than building local production, concentrating growth pressure on a single site's output and logistics.
The timing tracks continued growth in the category, with the UK probiotics market forecast to expand from $2.04bn in 2026 to $2.43bn by 2031, per Mordor Intelligence, as consumer awareness of gut health rises.
For the sector, sustained demand growth in individual markets like the UK and Ireland increases pressure on Yakult's single Almere manufacturing site and its European distribution network, rather than triggering local capacity investment.
The wider signal for the sector is that as gut-health categories mature, sales and distribution leadership becomes as important a growth lever as manufacturing capacity itself, particularly for companies serving multiple markets from one centralised plant.
