PepsiCo is intensifying efforts to safeguard global water resources as part of its ambition to become net water positive in high-risk areas. In 2024, the company restored 24 billion litres of water through initiatives spanning efficient manufacturing, sustainable farming and watershed replenishment.

The strategy rests on three pillars: improving water-use efficiency across operations and supply chains, replenishing stressed watersheds, and supporting safe water access for communities through the PepsiCo Foundation. Wetland restoration, tree planting and community education have become central tools.

In the Dominican Republic, the Ozama River Basin project planted over 160,000 trees, replenishing 110 million litres of water while reducing local erosion and flood risks. In Indonesia, efforts around Mount Pangrango and Gunung Halimun Salak National Parks replenished 21.6 million litres, safeguarding freshwater sources for over 30 million people.

PepsiCo is extending conservation beyond its direct suppliers to include entire watersheds, recognising the shared nature of water resources. In India’s Hathras District, collaboration with 1,600 farmers across ten villages restored more than 81 million litres of water through water-saving techniques and community-led planning.

Similar initiatives are underway in Mexico and the Florida Everglades, where wetland restoration and the adoption of drip irrigation on nearly 700 acres of sugarcane farms are improving water retention and reducing operational risk.

The company treats water security as a material business risk, vital to beverages, agricultural sourcing and manufacturing. Vice President of Water and Climate Roberta Barbieri emphasises that these initiatives generate measurable system change, improving crop yields and inspiring broader regional water stewardship.

PepsiCo’s approach demonstrates how large-scale corporate action can both protect critical resources and strengthen operational resilience, delivering measurable impact across supply chains and communities.
