US-headquartered precision manufacturer MGS has completed a 115,000 sq ft expansion of its manufacturing facility in Leixlip, Co. Kildare, adding cleanroom, automation and assembly capabilities to increase production capacity for pharmaceutical, diagnostic and medical device customers. The development strengthens MGS's European manufacturing footprint at a time of sustained demand growth for controlled-environment healthcare components.
As reported by Cleanroom Technology, the expansion adds new cleanroom space, automation areas, warehouse capacity, a new office, a metrology laboratory and upgraded maintenance infrastructure. The site now provides 8,000 sq m of pharma, diagnostic and med tech manufacturing space, including ISO Class 7 and 8 cleanrooms and a controlled white room environment.
A white room provides contamination control similar in purpose to a cleanroom but without the stringent certifications required for the highest-grade environments, making it a cost-effective option for processes requiring a controlled setting without mandatory high-level sanitation standards.
MGS manufactures precision injection-moulded components, assemblies and tooling solutions for pharmaceutical, diagnostic and medical device applications, including drug delivery devices and diagnostic consumables. The ISO 13485-certified Leixlip facility began operations in 2011 and has grown to approximately 200 employees supporting precision manufacturing and engineering activities. ISO 13485 certification indicates that a company's processes have been independently assessed and found to meet requirements for consistently producing safe, reliable medical devices and components.
Kieran Fahey, project manager at MGS, said the Leixlip site's new 115,000 sq ft expansion reflects the company's commitment to expanding capacity to meet growing demand from healthcare customers.
The Leixlip facility was established as MGS's first manufacturing plant outside North America. The expansion consolidates the site's role as the company's primary European production base for precision healthcare components, serving customers across the pharmaceutical, diagnostics and medical device sectors.
Ireland's medical technology sector is one of the largest in Europe. The country exports more than €13 billion in medical devices annually and is home to eight of the top ten global medical device companies, making cleanroom manufacturing capacity a strategically significant area of investment for multinational and indigenous operators alike.
The expansion positions MGS Leixlip to take on additional volume from European and global healthcare customers requiring ISO-compliant controlled manufacturing environments for regulated product categories.
