Wicklow-based Ace Group Packaging is set to invest up to €2m in state-of-the-art paper bag-making machines and automated production lines, aiming to significantly increase output and ramp up exports to the UK and European markets.
Founded in 1971, Ace Group originally specialised in commercial refrigeration before evolving to include a medical division supplying refrigeration and calibration services to the pharmacy and medical sectors nationwide.
During the Covid pandemic, the company pivoted to produce medical facemasks, and in June 2024, it launched a fully self-funded paper bag manufacturing and printing division. Over the last 18 months, the division has produced more than seven million custom-printed, sustainable paper bags for clients in the retail, food, and pharmacy sectors.
Owner Robin Gardner highlighted the company’s growth plans, noting that planning permission has been secured to double the size of its Blessington facility.
“We have ambitious plans for the future, but we never forget where we are from. We work with Irish suppliers, we create local employment and we reinvest in our local community,” he said.
The investment will also support the company’s sustainability initiatives. Using government grants, Ace Group has installed 185 solar panels, generating more than 100% of its energy needs and exporting excess power to the grid.
Gardner emphasised the importance of local support: “We would not have enjoyed the success we have without the support of Wicklow LEO. They have supported us with grants for marketing and employment as well as invaluable guidance on business and export development.”
The expansion is expected to double headcount from five to ten employees over the next 12 months, while reinforcing Ace Group’s position as a high-quality, sustainable supplier for domestic and international clients.
